My thoughts about teaching music

My focus is on finding the pupil’s interests and needs, and adapting my teaching to help pupils develop a passion for their instrument and confidence in performance. I am happy to teach towards exams if pupils wish to take them, but this is not compulsory.

Musical Experience

I started playing the violin at the age of 10, when my primary school decided to start offering instrumental lessons, and within a year I also joined a string orchestra at East Devon Music Centre. I loved it so much there that I stayed for 8 years! This experience of playing and performing in an ensemble was great fun, and really helped my confidence.

In 2007 I graduated in Music from Southampton University. During my three years there I studied both modern and baroque violin, played in the symphony orchestra and sinfonietta, and my quartet was lucky enough to have a masterclass with the Allegri Quartet. I also ran a student volunteer programme which provided music therapy sessions in local residential homes, playing music of all genres in something akin to instrumental karaoke!

In 2007/8 I played in the Exeter University Chamber Orchestra while teaching part-time and doing postgraduate study. I am about to start work as a Teaching Assistant at the Exeter Royal Academy for Deaf Education, and I look forward to establishing myself as a violin teacher. I am very excited to be joining Exeter Young Strings, as I believe the groups are a wonderful way to help children learning string instruments.
