My thoughts about teaching music
For small children I like to use the Nelson method, but also use a wide range of other material and enjoy teaching groups of 2/3. I am happy for children to take music exams if they want to.
I am classically trained, but like to offer many different genres to the pupil. I find teaching to the pupils’ particular learning style is essential for them to enjoy playing and for them to progress. I encourage my pupils to play in ensembles as I believe that this is what music is all about.
Musical Experience
Alison began studying the violin at the age of 7 and became the leader of the Jersey Youth Orchestra. She studied Fine Art in Cardiff and became a graphic artist at the same time as playing professionally in local quartets, shows and folk groups.
She moved to Devon in 1996 and decided to pursue a music career, having completed the performance part of an ABRSM diploma and a PGCE. She worked as a peripatetic violin teacher, string coach for the Devon Youth String Orchestra and as a professional player for several years and then took up a post as a class music/choral teacher in a Devon primary school.
She then decided to look after her baby full-time! Alison is building up her teaching again now that her baby is older and plays professionally in ‘The Harbour String Quartet’ and in Tenstrings, an acoustic guitar and violin duo.
