There is an aulternative to Associated Board Exams Tuesday, March 02, 2010

I’ve always used the associated board for exams, but I’m now really interested in trying out the Trinity Guildhall exams. They have some quite interesting options such one of your pieces can be your own composition. Lowena performed one of her compositions at the workshop and we were really grateful to Musicroom in Exeter for donating vouchers as thank you presents for Lowena and the 4 other children who performed.

Other options include studies as an alternative to scales and there are various alternatives to the aural tests. Grade 5 theory is not needed to go on to hire grades.

I will be looking in to these in more detail and may end up using the two boards along side each other. I will however still be encouraging my pupils to take grade 5 theory as it is very beneficial.

The other interesting option they have are performance grades at 3, 5 and 8. These are assessed as a performance (just pieces - no supporting tests) and you can choose your own pieces provided they are approved to be the right standard. Part of the mark is on presentation i.e. how you and your accompanist are dressed and present themselves on stage. Arlo may be a good candidate for these in the future!
