Jackie and I are going to be trying out a new teaching method called Cellobabies for children under 6 years. This method is based on the same musicianship principles we currently use in our Mini Music Makers classes.
Cellobabies is a method developed by a cellist friend of mine, Kay Tucker. I am really looking forward to trying this as Kay is getting some really outstanding results and there is ever growing interest across the country and abroad.
Kay has adapted her method for the violin [called ‘Violinbabies’ surprisingly enough!] Here is a comment for Sara, a violin teacher using the method:-
“Violinbabies is a great way for young children to start on the violin. It addresses the issues of note-reading, rhythm and technique in a fun and engaging manner. Instead of boring technical exercises, there are lots of games to play and fun songs to learn, which instil all the right approaches to violin playing. In addition, the pupils learn to compose their own ideas, right from the start and therefore they quickly become confident in expressing their own creativity. Violinbabies ensures that pupils read music with ease, rhythms are no longer panicked and that they are aurally secure. What a great start! “
I hope that Jackie and I will soon be making simialar statements so watch this space!

I hope everyone who came to Kay’s workshop on Sunday got as much out of it as I did! Although I had already bought a pupils and teachers cello book it was fascinating to learn more on how Kay works.
My 5 year old daugher Lowena took part at the end of the workshop so that Kay could show how she would work with a child of that age.
Lowena has been playing for a while and is coming up to preparatory test standard but still really enjoyed the session. I can see that it would benefit her to include some of Kay’s cellobabies methods in her lessons and practice at this stage and beyond!
Thank you Kay
